decades to come. white house officials knew that. they understood that and recognized that it was a primary driving reason why biden brought up the murder of jamal khashoggi at the very top of the meeting and proceeded to talk about it after meeting with the crown prince. saudi officials put out the crown prince giving fist bumps to the entire team. >> this was to bestow legit imay on a ruler given the cold shoulder after the 18 months in office. it wasn't about a bilateral relationship with saudi arabia and president biden made clear that it was about a relationship with the rapidly transitioning relationship. >> and it was so important that he was willing to take the sharpest criticism for jamal khashoggi's fiance, and explained why. >> i'm sorry she feels that way. i was straightforward back then, and i was straightforward today. this is a meeting and i didn't

BOC seizes P8.3-B smuggled goods in H1 2022

(File photo) MANILA - The Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Monday reported the seizure of PHP8.37 billion worth of smuggled goods for the first half of 2022. In a statement, the BOC said the goods were confiscated in 293 operations, with counterfeit items topping the list with a total value of PHP5.23 billion. This is followed by illegal drugs at PHP1.67 billion and general merchandise at PHP388.80 million. Around 58 Letters of Authority (LOA) were implemented in the same period, 44 of which yielded positive results. A total of 78 alert orders were issued, 57 of which were positive for violation of pertinent customs laws, rules, and regulations. Meanwhile, as part of its anti-corruption and integrity campaign under the leadership of Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero, the BOC has issued 67 additional show cause orders from January to June 2022. This has led to the dismissal, suspension, relief, and reshuffling of errant Customs employees. During the first six months of the year, the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) launched 333 personnel investigations which resulted in seven filed administrative cases before the BOC-Legal Service and another seven cases transmitted to the National Bureau of Investigation. Three personnel were dismissed, seven were suspended, one was reprimanded, 27 were relieved, and 249 were reshuffled to various offices and ports within the first half of the year due to irregular activities. On the other hand, aligned with the BOC's 10-Point Priority Program for 2022, one of which is pursuing Integrity Development and Quality Management for all offices and ports, 13 BOC ports and sub-ports have been certified with ISO 9001:2015, an internationally accepted standard for quality management. These included the ports of Manila, Clark, Batangas, Davao, Legazpi, Tacloban, Cebu, NAIA, and their respective Customer Care Centers (CCC). The sub-ports of Dumaguete, Iligan, Mactan, CCC-Subic, and CCC-Limay are also ISO certified, while other Customs offices are in various stages of the ISO compliance process. Customer Care Centers are also established in all 17 ports, including six sub-ports, under the Bureau, providing modern service centers for a centralized document receiving and releasing, information area for inquiry and other general concerns, payment center, and other Customs Services. Around 91.76 percent of the BOC's processes are digitized which is aligned with its no-contact policy, Ease of Doing Business Act, and the Anti-Red Tape Act. (PNA) }

BFAR lifts shellfish ban in Bataan

(File photo courtesy of PTV) BALANGA CITY, Bataan - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has lifted the shellfish ban in Bataan after samples collected in the coastal towns and this city were found negative for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). Provincial agriculturist Joey Roberto Dizon said in an advisory on Wednesday night that BFAR issued Shellfish Advisory No. 08 dated March 2, 2022, based on the results of red tide monitoring activities of the fishery agency and the local government units (LGUs). Negative results for the PSP or red tide toxin were obtained from three consecutive weeks of sampling in the towns of Hermosa, Orani, Samal, Abucay, Pilar, Orion, Limay, Mariveles, and Balanga City. BFAR declared the shellfish ban on Nov. 6, 2021, and Feb. 25, 2022, after shellfish raised in these coastal areas were tested not fit for human consumption due to the presence of red tide. With the lifting of the ban, Dizon said eating, gathering, and/or harvesting and marketing of shellfish from the eight towns and a city are now permitted. He said BFAR and the LGUs are continuously monitoring the coastal waters of Bataan to safeguard public health and to protect the fishery industry. (PNA) }

Shellfish ban from 9 Bataan LGUs remains in effect

(File photo courtesy of PTV) CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Thursday said the shellfish ban in Bataan that was raised on Nov. 6, 2021, is still in effect. As per BFAR Bulletin No. 3, shellfish samples collected from nine Bataan towns still tested positive for the red tide toxin causing paralytic shellfish poisoning. Covered by the ban are those raised and gathered from the towns of Hermosa, Orani, Samal, Abucay, Balanga City, Pilar, Orion, Limay, and Mariveles. "The public is advised to refrain from eating, gathering or harvesting, transporting and marketing shellfish from the coastal waters of Bataan until such time that the toxicity level has gone below the regulatory limit," BFAR National Director Eduardo Gongona said in an advisory. The regulatory limit for shellfish to be safe for human consumption is 60 unit grams of toxin per 100 grams of shellfish meat. Fish are safe for human consumption as long as they are fresh and with gills and intestines removed before cooking. (PNA) }
