A dire situation is likely to unfold along Florida’s Gulf Coast in less than 12 hours as Hurricane Idalia continues to rapidly intensify in the Gulf of Mexico as the cyclone nears a Category 3 storm.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for dozens of counties over the weekend and prepositioned resources to provide immediate support for areas that will be impacted by Hurricane Idalia.
Idalia continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. Its winds have increased to 85 mph.
Hurricane Idalia is now a cat three hurricane with 120 mph winds. More strengthening is expected.
Winds decreased slightly before landfall Wednesday morning in the Big Bend area of Florida.
