Navies of the 'Quad' can swing together to tackle any threat in Indo-Pacific: Top Indian & US commanders | India News

PM Modi, US President Biden, Australia PM Morrison and Japan PM Suga - leaders of the four Quad nations.
NEW DELHI: Top Indian and American military commanders on Wednesday said navies of the “Quad” countries could seamlessly swing into action for a joint military operation if the need arises to tackle a threat and ensure a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
The messaging about the Quad grouping of India, the US, Japan and Australia against a belligerent and expansionist China in the Indo-Pacific was clear. It also came a day after the Chinese official media gleefully latched onto the recent passage by a US warship through India’s EEZ without prior consent to ask New Delhi to re-evaluate its ties with Washington and shed its “illusions”.

Report: India's AIP System Test A Step Towards Countering Chinese PLA Navy's Ongoing Expansion

An Scorpene-class submarine of the Indian Navy.
The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully conducted the final test of the land-based prototype of the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system in Mumbai on Monday (9 March).
The AIP system will be retrofitted into the Kalvari class submarines, whose third model INS Karanj is set to be commissioned on Wednesday.
This new AIP system means the diesel submarines can stay underwater for longer periods of time and become more silent than nuclear submarines.
This latest development is seen as India’s conscious efforts to build capabilities and counter the emergence of the Chinese naval force.

Rationale behind India developing fleet of aircraft carriers

Synopsis
Robert Farley, writing for The National Interest, wrote that the rationale behind India's carrier force development has three reasons.
With one large carrier in service and another on the way, India has become one of the world's pre-eminent naval aviation powers.
At present, India has two aircraft carriers - INS Vikramaditya and INS Viraat, while it is planning to develop the third - INS Vishaal by 2030. The question arises why is India developing a fleet of aircraft carriers?
Robert Farley, writing for The National Interest - American bimonthly international affairs magazine, wrote that the rationale behind India's carrier force development has three reasons.

History Made: Meet India's Vikrant Aircraft Carrier | The National Interest

The carrier saw combat and served India well.
Key point: This carrier no longer serves New Delhi. However, it did fight in combat and helped India win a war with Pakistan.
In the wake of the commissioning of China’s second aircraft carrier, it’s worth remembering that the People’s Republic of China is actually only the third Asian state to operate its own aircraft carrier. The first was Japan, which after a long hiatus following its World War II misadventures, is only just getting back into carrier operations.
This first appeared earlier and is being reposted due to reader interest.

Republic Day Parade: Navy Tableau To Show INS Vikrant Operations During 1971 War

India is celebrating the golden jubilee year (Swarnim Vijay Varsh) of the victory in the 1971 war
New Delhi:
The Indian Navy's tableau at the Republic Day parade this year will showcase models of INS Vikrant and naval operations that were conducted during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, said its spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal on Friday.
"This year's tableau being paraded is in pursuance of tri-services theme "Swarnim Vijay Varsh" and showcases Indian Navy's stellar role during the 1971 Indo-Pak war," he said at a press conference here.
The forward part of the tableau depicts the attack on Karachi harbour by the missile boats undertaken as part of Operation Trident and Python, Madhwal mentioned.

Naval defence: Does Indian Navy need a third aircraft carrier? The debate, explained

The debate around a third aircraft essentially arises from the monumental cost outlay required to build one.

Key Highlights
The third aircraft carrier, INS Vishal, still to be approved, may cost up to $8 billion and is likely to take 14 years to build
Some, including officers from the Navy itself, have contended that the naval defence budget may be better spent in modernising India's submarine fleet
In recent years, the Indian Navy has also been the victim of falling budgets
A third aircraft carrier is an “operational necessity” said Navy Chief Admiral Karmabir Singh reviving the discussion within India's defence establishment over whether the in-operation INS Vikramaditya and the INS Vikrant (currently undergoing sea trials) needs a partner to expand the Navy's force projection in the Indian Ocean. The Navy chief's words are a reiteration of a similar call he made earlier this month on Navy Day when he said, “air power at sea is absolutely required.”
