Our view: New EPA head shows promise

It was somewhat acerbic, as is Gary Trudeau’s style.
In January 1982, the “Doonesbury” cartoonist placed an incidental character, an Environmental Protection Agency staffer, on the ledge of an office building, promising to jump unless then-EPA head Anne M. Gorsuch (a Reagan appointee) agreed that “the purpose of the Environmental Protection Agency is to protect the environment.”
As Orwellian as things seemed then, they were worse during the Trump administration, when the agency seemed to exist only to facilitate business interests and to dismantle itself.
But there’s a new EPA head in town. North Carolina has loaned Goldsboro native and N.C. A&T graduate Michael Regan, the former top environmental enforcer for the state, to the essential federal organization. We feel confident that he’ll be able to turn the EPA ship around. ....

City of Elizabethton receives Chamber's gift of historic train display

ELIZABETHTON — Thursday’s Elizabethton City Council meeting saw a bit of history as council members accepted a train display from the local Chamber.
The display was given to the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce many years ago and was displayed on city property next to U.S. Highway 19E where the Chamber offices used to be located.
With the Chamber’s move to its new offices in downtown Elizabethton, it was decided to turn the train over to the city to make sure the train remains properly cared for.
“We are delighted to gift this icon to the City for safe keeping as we complete our move,” said Chamber Executive Director Joy McCray. “We hope tourists and train enthusiasts will continue to come and see it.” ....

Descendants' emotions run high at dedication of UVa's Memorial to Enslaved Laborers

ALLISON WRABEL
The (Charlottesville) Daily Progress
CHARLOTTESVILLE — Seeing her great-great-great-uncle Peyton Skipwith’s name carved into the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia fills Carole Malone’s heart “with pride and sadness.”
“Peyton, along with 4,000 to 5,000 known and unknown patriots and citizens, toiled at UVa under unspeakable horrors and oppression to carve out a life of dignity and hope for their families and descendants,” she said.
With virtual and in-person recognition, a long-planned memorial to enslaved people who built and worked at the university was officially dedicated Saturday.
Though finished in 2020, the initial dedication was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The prerecorded dedication ceremony, which aired Saturday, brought together descendants, university officials and current and former students to reflect on the creation of the memorial. ....

'This seems impossible!'

By JIM SPEHAR
Maybe it’s a combination of realism and the fact that I’m a professionally trained skeptic thanks to what some critics might consider an appropriate B.S. in Journalism. Or perhaps my status as a native hereabouts with some experience in local campaigning. But count me a little less certain than some about the possibility that last week’s Grand Junction City Council election marks some sort of turning point in local politics.
“All of the far-right candidates seeking seats on the Grand Junction City Council were defeated on Tuesday, a sign that the influence of Trumpism and Lauren Boebert might already be waning in conservative circles,” opined the anonymous authors of the left-leaning political blog Colorado Pols. ....
