Address all their needs. how you doing? you all right? i m doing all right. everything good with you? good man. thanks, man. will a cannon has been the sheriff of charleston county for more than a quarter century. he s witnessed the problem from its early days. you go back to the late 60s, early 70s, the psychiatric community was of moving away from institutionalization. and so what was supposed to follow along with that was community-based funding for community-based programs. and those programs did not follow. and so you ve got some real challenges there. and a lot of it has to do with, okay, you re not putting people in psychiatric facilities like you used to. so more often than not, law enforcement ends up having to deal with society s failure to really fully address that issue. mayberrys he s been suffering from mental health disorder ....

The ice cream lady didn t like him. this is an ongoing pervasive problem. something should have been done long before we got to this point, and that s not to point a finger and say somebody else is to blame, but it should have been addressed. if he presented these issues when he was a young child and this has always been a problem, and think it was dr. jeff at the top of our show talking about he s brooding, he s depressed, you know, he s exhibiting these particular personality traits, why was there no institutionalization when he was younger, you know. we talked about he was on meds. what was the diagnosis? there s so much unknown right now. but it s disturbing to me that we could have gotten this far along and i think brian nailed it when he said, when did they know and what did they know? that and my answer, how do we prevent this in the future? my guess is we re ig probably going to learn about the medications he was on, the treatment he received. ....

He showed an ability to reach across the aisle and pull together a bipartisan coalition. strong choice. who s next? i take exception to the next one. oh, why the exception? i ll let you say it first. pope francis. in one year he s come in and really been able too change feelings about the catholic church. i think not to reduce his moral leadership to politics but the republican party could learn a lot from pope francis. that s exactly what you did by putting him on the list. you put him among all these other people. did i. but we re throwing it all together. this guy is preaching love and forgiveness and trying to get rid of all the trappings of institutionalization and you put him with these other people, they live by those things. honestly if the republican party could take a note about focusing on core messages and not betting dogged by by divisive social issues, it s a moral leadership. ....

the secret service says security measures were in place, agents were nearby ready to take action. i know they don t have jurisdiction for international events but is the secret service allowed to do any vetting on their own? would they be able to find out if an individual like this had some sort of institutionalization in his past? yes, and yes. we do and we can. the problem is, we re used to united states operational law enforcement standards. ncic, national crime information center. we can just run your name and get basically an entire criminal history on you. those standards don t necessarily apply overseas. so even if this individual, he may have been arrested and had a mental health history. they may not have known at all and if they don t know, our intelligence sources aren t going to know either. there s a co-dependency there. we talked about this before the memorial. we talked to bob baer, former cia agent, a gentleman who worked in operations for a former white house. in ....

Lost in the translegislation. sure. now, aside from the clear moral imperative to feed our nation s seniors, there is also, as i understand it, an economic benefit to this program, is that right? that s right. and that s the message that we re really trying to get across, because it appears that the social and moral imperative is not really working. we have learned that for every dollar invested in meals on wheels, there is a savings of up to $50 in medicaid alone. that doesn t include medicare. so let s talk about why that s so significant. we can feed a senior meals on wheels for an entire year for the equivalent cost of one day in the hospital. and if we re able to keep seniors independent and healthy in their own homes for as long as they want, then we can avoid very expensive alternative care visits to the emergency room, hospitalization, long-term care. worse yet, institutionalization. so there is a huge economic ....
