Researchers from Kyushu University and Asahi Kasei Corporation have developed a new way to estimate the age of microplastics found in the upper oceans. The new method combines plastic oxidation analysis with UV exposure and ambient temperature. By applying their new method to microplastics found across the North Pacific Ocean, the team found that the age of microplastics in nearshore regions ranged from 0 to 5 years old, whereas microplastics from offshore regions ranged from 1 to 3 years old. ....

Researchers have uncovered the mathematical and biological mechanism behind the interdigitation at cell boundaries. These structures are commonly found in epithelial cells in tissues such as the kidneys and nasal glands, and is proposed to facilitate paracellular transport. The team found that the boundary dynamics show a 'push-and-pull' movement that exhibits scaling that can be reproduced by the Edward-Wilkinson model. They also found that myosin may be responsible for the nature of the dynamics. ....
