New Braunfels City Council members on Monday considered two rezoning requests that had been postponed from a meeting last month, taking no action on one proposal while approving the other.
Council members took no action on the first reading of a rezoning proposal that would have allowed a variety of residential and non-residential development, including an âMU-Bâ High-Intensity Mixed-Use District, on a nearly 50-acre tract located south of the intersection of South Walnut Avenue and West Klein Road.
The item, which had been postponed by council members last month upon the request from the applicant to allow for additional talks with the surrounding property owners, died from a lack of motion. ....

Tempers flare over multifamily housing at council meeting

New Braunfels City Council members approved three zoning change requests during Monday s nearly six-hour meeting, but not before a group of residents expressed irritation and anger with how members are presiding over the city s rapid growth and zoning for proposed multifamily housing projects.
Members took no action for lack of a motion on the second and final reading of an ordinance for a proposed rezoning of about 2.3 acres at 948 Broadway from M-2 Heavy Industrial District to MU-A Low-Intensity Mixed-Use District.
But among the allowed property uses of MU-A zoning is multifamily housing, which drew ire from some residents.

New Braunfels has a new police chief after city council members unanimously confirmed the appointment of Keith Lane to the post during its Monday meeting.
The selection of Lane, who had been serving in an interim capacity since late last year, comes following a nationwide search by the city, assisted by the Keller-based executive recruitment firm of Strategic Government Resources.
A field of 62 candidates from 15 states â including 35 from Texas â was narrowed down to four finalists who visited New Braunfels this week for in-person interviews and tours of the community and meetings with officers and employees at the police department, according to City Manager Robert Camareno. ....
