NGC 1808 Starburst Galaxy in Columba - Astronomy Magazine - Interactive Star Charts, Planets, Meteors, Comets, Telescopes

763
NGC 1808 is barred spiral galaxy located in the southern constellation of Columba. It was discovered by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop from Australia, who describe it as a "faint nebula". It is a barred spiral with marked similarities to our home Milky Way Galaxy. NGC 1808 is distinguished by a peculiar nucleus, an unusually warped disk, and strange flows of hydrogen gas out from the central regions. Amidst all of this, because NGC 1808 is undergoing with intense star formation activity it has been deemed a starburst galaxy. NGC 1808 is relatively close to our Milky Way, and spans in about 35,000 light-years.

NGC 3372 BRIGHT NEBULA COMPLEX IN CARINA - Astronomy Magazine - Interactive Star Charts, Planets, Meteors, Comets, Telescopes

The Eta Carinae Nebula is one of the largest region of ionized hydrogen gas in our Galaxy. Expanded in a distance of 260 light years it has seven times the size of the Orion Nebula. The photograph only shows a partial view of the complex. The Nebula has produced the Star Eta Carina which is among of the most massive and luminous star in our Milky Way. NGC 3372 present us its generous detail and regions formed of bright and dark interstellar matter. The Eta Carinae Nebula was discovered by Abble Lacaille during his 2-year journey to the Cape of Good Hope in 1751/1752.

Messier 106 in Canes Venatici - Astronomy Magazine - Interactive Star Charts, Planets, Meteors, Comets, Telescopes

315
Messier 106 is a spiral galaxy lying 22 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici. It is a Seyfert galaxy with an active nucleus emitting radio waves and X-rays due to presence of a supermassive black hole actively consuming matter within its core. Violent churning of spiral arms, dust clouds, and sprays of ionized hydrogen can be seen revolving around the nucleus. The the irregular galaxy to its lower left is UGC7356 which lies at a similar distance and the edge on spiral galaxy to its lower right is NGC 4248 which lies 24 million light-years away. Other faint, distant galaxies can be seen scattered around the image.
