Times that try the souls of men The Punch Published 18 July 2021 For Nigeria, it has arrived. ‘It’ is what Thomas Paine, an American philosopher, characterised in 1776 as “the times that try men’s souls.” In his “The Crisis” essay, he said: “The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.” For Nigeria, it is a blinding crisis. So fierce is it that we have no room to reflect on advancement as a people. First, we must survive.
