Game. last two weeks ago, that first week, judge ellis was, indeed, putting his thumb on the scale in my opinion. very hard on both prosecutors, all three prosecutors, whom i know well. that was the first week. this past week things changed a little bit. he s pulling back on his criticism, his interjecting, and i think at the end of last week i wouldn t say it was affection, but the warmth, relative warmth he showed the prosecution s case seemed to evolve a little bit, and here is why. based on my times in front of him and my trials and my hearings, i think he now gets this case. he now sees the big picture, what i call the final mosaic. as i said before the camera came, i have done 30 tax trials. i have never seen more greed, lies and manipulation in a tax trial than i have seen in this ....

Interjecting during cross-examination of the government s main cooperating witness whose credibility is so crucial to this case and when he is asking a lot of these questions and sort of weighing in on his credibility. that is completely out of line and totally inappropriate. i m going to ask all of you to hang out longer. you ll be here the rest of the show that s a good thing because there s a lot to talk about this morning, including the last line of defense from one of the president s key allies in congress. he s been caught on tape explaining why the president s party needs to hold on to power. it s a message you might here echoed by other republicans this fall. we re going to bring you those recordings as you look live at downtown summerville new jersey, population just over 12,000 people. we don t have 12,000 on the plaza but we re close. the first person to survive alzheimer s disease is out there. and the alzheimer s association is going to make it happen ....

Questioning when it started to veer into conversations gates had with the special counsel s office about the trump campaign. and then the loose ends tied up on a story we reported on for months. finally now starting to make sense. an e-mail submitted into evidence shows manafort pushed a chicago banker for the job of army secretary, a banker who had secured manafort millions of dollars in loans. joining me again is nbc s julia ainsley who s been in court with me this morning. dan goldman, and former assistant u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york. julia, even though gates got back on the stand for cross-examination this morning, that are was quick, we ve seen that wrap up and now the prosecution has their second shot, right? reporter: that s right. so this is the redirect. we could see this go back and forth. judge ellis seems to be able to allow them to come back in, ask a lot of questions. judge ellis also jumps in there himself a few times. that might be something th ....

Couldn t have kept too close an eye on his money if gates was able to steal some of it. those seem like really weird, weird, weird things for a judge to do, no? it s very unusual. i ve never seen anything like it, but i will say that i have heard that judge ellis does have this reputation for being very involved. now, on the plus side he s engaged. he s paying close attention. he has strong knowledge of the law. but i just feel like he is interjecting so much it could be a distraction for the jury. the other thing he does and you mentioned is he is kind of obsessed with moving the case along quickly. all judges are to some extent, but i have never seen it to this degree. and so much so that i worry that it could impact the government s ability to meet its burden of proof. it s a very complex document intensive case and so many times when the government has asked to publish their exhibits, that is, show them to the jury in real time, the judge has said, the jury can look at that later ....

The problem is russia has complicated an already complicated conflict in syria by interjecting itself into this fight. the civil war into a complex international crisis point. i agree with the analysis, the united states must remain in that part of the world in order to as i said uphold the pres. s existing red lines on american interests in the middle east, backing off no matter how flattering vladimir putin is would be bad for the united states and i hope that doesn t happen. ed: let s talk about something, the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, an important world leader on his own, a key ally of donald trump. they have been tight in the early days of the trump administration, he talked syria ....
