He became the first Fresno State wrestler at 149/150 since 1994 to be crowned an All-American. A four-letter winner at De La Salle High School, the standout wrestler was a three-time CIF State Tournament Qualifier and won the 132 lbs weight class as a senior in 2019. He joins teammates Cohlton Schultz and Richard Figeoura as current Sun Devil wrestlers who have won a Doc Buchanan crown. During his redshirt season, Parco wrestled unattached to the university at 141 and tallied seven wins by decision, four major decisions, three technical falls and three falls.
Jaren JJ Powell (Northlake, TX 149 lbs.) Powell is a two-time Texas state champion in two weight classes (138 and 149) with Liberty Christian Prep. He won all four of his matches by fall within the first minute of wrestling in the 2020 TAPPS State Wrestling Tournament. ....
Feb 12, 2021 Penn State continues to rework its 2021 wrestling schedule, quickly assembling a huge match for Valentine s Day. The Lions, who are ranked No. 3 nationally according to InterMat Wrestling, will visit No. 2 Michigan at 11 a.m. Sunday. Big Ten Network will televise. The match also will be streamed on Big Ten Network+. Penn State (3-0) has not wrestled since defeating Wisconsin 34-6 on Feb. 2. The Lions were scheduled to host No. 1 Iowa on Friday night, but Iowa has paused team activities because of COVID-19 protocols. Michigan (3-0) has been idle since Jan. 17 because of a program-wide athletics pause. The Wolverines return to action Friday night against No. 12 Ohio State before hosting Penn State. The Penn State-Michigan match originally was scheduled for Feb. 7. ....
Feb 10, 2021 Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson expects the Big Ten championships to run as scheduled next month at the Bryce Jordan Center, though the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials had to be relocated from the arena. Penn State and USA Wrestling announced this week that the 2021 trials would be moved from the Bryce Jordan Center in part because of COVID-19 protocols. Penn State is scheduled to host the Big Ten tournament March 6-7, which Sanderson said he expects to happen. We are working through to figure out how we could host the Big Ten [tournament], but we have every intention on making it work, obviously, Sanderson said Wednesday. All the athletes in the Big Ten are tested every day. We re testing every day. So there s not much more that we can do to keep everything safe. ....
Penn State s third-ranked wrestling team will wait a little longer to begin its season. The program announced that Sunday s scheduled home-opener against Michigan State has been postponed. In separate statements, both teams said they will work with the Big Ten on rescheduling. Penn State is the only team in the top 10 of InterMat Wrestling s rankings that hasn t wrestled a match this season. The Lions previously postponed their scheduled Jan. 16 opener against Rutgers after pausing workouts because of positive COVID-19 test results within the program. Earlier this week, coach Cael Sanderson said that Penn State had resumed workouts, though an unannounced number of wrestlers were unavailable. Sanderson said he expected the team to wrestle against Michigan State but added, we re at the mercy of the tests. ....
Jan 19, 2021 Penn State has resumed wrestling practice and is poised to host what now becomes its season-opening match Sunday against Michigan State. But, as coach Cael Sanderson said, you never know. We re planning on wrestling Sunday but, yeah, we re at the mercy of the tests, Sanderson said. Penn State paused team activities Jan. 13 and postponed its scheduled opener against Rutgers three days later because of positive test results for COVID-19 within the program. Penn State does not release specific testing details, but Sanderson said he s hopeful the program has gotten through the worst of it. Sanderson added that he believes the positive tests resulted partly from the team s decision to allow wrestlers to leave campus and visit their families over the holidays. The coach said that wasn t a good idea as far as keeping COVID out of the room but added that he still believes it was the right decision. ....
