BEST is set to hike fares for weekly and monthly passes on March 1, leaving daily fares unchanged. The hikes are up to 86% for monthly passes and up to 17% for weekly passes. BEST has also reduced pass slabs from 42 to 18. Commuter rights activist Anil Galgali said he was against the hikes. BEST's ridership increased by over 10 lakh in the last four years after fares were made affordable in 2019.

An old MSRTC bus MUMBAI: Commuters and transport activists have complained about the bad condition of MSRTC buses plying in the city. At many places, they are more visible than BEST buses. There are complaints of poor lighting and unhygienic buses, but BEST administration is happy they came to the rescue of passengers during Covid. BEST has taken 1,000 buses from MSRTC on lease. It is a temporary arrangement during Covid, and may be taken off once the situation is normal, said a senior official, adding, MSRTC buses helped us improve frequency of buses on many routes during peak hours. They ferry around 5 lakh commuters daily and have reduced the wait time at bus-stops. The buses are not that bad, the official said.

They have decided to boycott taxis and instead push for BEST to introduce circular bus routes with the new AC Mini buses in Mahim area. Civic activist Irfan Machiwala said, Due to short distance, Kaali Peeli drivers have been refusing scores of local residents who are now frustrated. We have therefore petitioned the BEST to introduce new bus services so that we are not stranded on the road anywhere. The buses will cover some of the prominent routes in the area.
