Artlink New Creative Space Artlink is working with Park Central Mall and Gould Evans to transform nearly 20,000 square feet of basement space at the mall into a multidisciplinary space for Arizona artists. Community members can take virtual or online tours this month, and suggest best uses for the space by completing a survey. Organizers have not announced a timeline of next steps for the project. Ballet Arizona is returning to Desert Botanical Garden. Tim Fuller Ballet Arizona will present the world premiere of Ib Andersen’s The Four Seasons on an outdoor stage at Desert Botanical Garden, where 15 performances are scheduled between May 18 and June 5. Set to the music by Vivaldi, it marks the first large-scale public performance for the ballet company since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
Desert Botanical Garden New Outdoor Art Several new outdoor artworks are being installed around metro Phoenix this month. Tempe Public Art commissioned Roy Wasson Valle to create a piece on a clear wall at the Tempe Center for the Arts sculpture garden, which will be visible from The Gallery at TCA and the path running along Tempe Town Lake. An installation titled Water will be on view at Desert Botanical Garden starting on February 23. Created by Natasha Lisitsa and Daniel Schultz of Waterlily Pond Studio, the piece spans 100 feet and was made with materials that include 8,000 colored wooden dowels and 2,000 red flowering blooms. ....
Triumph Over Tragedy: A Muralistâs Journey to Recovery Jesse Yazzie stands in front of the Triumph over Tragedy mural on Roosevelt Row. Triumph Over Tragedy was unveiled Friday, Jan. 15, kicking off Roosevelt Rowâs UNCONTAINED outdoor project featuring four emerging Latino and Indigenous artists. The UNCONTAINED mural project provides a platform for Latino and Indigenous artists to showcase their stories on a shipping container in the Roosevelt Row Arts District, and Navajo artist Jesse Yazzie was selected as the first to display his work. When Yazzie got out of prison a few months ago, he had to mainly rely on his family to get back on his feet. His sister, who knew another muralist named Isaac Caruso, introduced the two artists and Yazzie assisted Caruso with a couple of projects. It was Caruso who encouraged Yazzie to apply for the UNCONTAINED project. ....
