Sarah Halimi was a Jewish, 65-year-old, former kindergarten director, who in April 2017 was beaten, then thrown to her death from her flat in north-east Paris.
The killer was Kobili Traoré, a Muslim of Malian origin who was her neighbour. During the attack, which lasted between 20 and 30 minutes, he chanted verses from the Koran and shouted "Allahu Akbar" - God is greatest.

A judge has turned in his judicial robes in protest at the decision not to try a Malian migrant alleged to have beaten an elderly Jewish woman and thrown her to her death from a balcony while shouting “Allah Akbar!” on grounds that he was suffering from a delirious episode induced by heavy cannabis abuse.
France’s Court of Cassation ruled that Kobili Traoré, previously reported to be a convicted drug dealer, could not be held criminally responsible for Sarah Halimi’s killing due to his mental condition at the time.
“When the judgment was delivered and the Court of Cassation confirmed that Kobili Traoré, the murderer of Sarah Halimi, was made inaccessible to any criminal sanction, my first reaction as a judge was to say to myself ‘I’m dreaming!'” lamented Jack Broda, who sat on the bench of the Tribunal of Commerce, in an interview with FigaroVox.

A French judge with more than 25 years of service resigned from his position on Monday, in protest of a controversial court ruling earlier this month that allowed an anti-Semitic man who killed a Jewish woman in 2017 to escape trial.
Jack Broda, an 82-year-old associate judge at the judicial tribunal in the city of Nancy, told media outlets that he could no longer serve his post after France's highest court chose not to try a man responsible for murder.

JTA — Outraged by a high court’s ruling in the Sarah Halimi affair, a French-Jewish judge has quit his post.
“I decided to resign over the ruling, which at first I couldn’t believe,” Jack Broda of the Tribunal of Commerce of Nancy, in eastern France, told Le Figaro. “My resignation was accepted and regretted.”
Broda announced his resignation on Friday, Le Figaro reported Tuesday.
On April 14, France’s highest court determined that Kobili Traore, a 31-year-old Muslim man, was not criminally liable for his actions on April 7, 2017, when he killed his neighbor Halimi, a 65-year-old Jewish kindergarten teacher and physician.
