At Tuesday’s Ionia County Board of Commissioners meeting, area farmers reported the Road Department's work to place ditches next to rural roads has made it impossible to access some of their fields. Cindy Chipman, owner of Gallagher Farms in Belding, said after her road was “ditched” by the Road Department, her farm could no longer safely move necessary machines around, potentially damaging their equipment or causing an accident.

Ionia County commissioners on Tuesday approved creating a new lawn care maintenance position and adding four employees to the janitorial/maintenance department. With Commissioner Jack Shattuck absent and Philip Hesche voting “no,” commissioners voted 5-1 to create a lawn maintenance position within the Facilities Maintenance department, with a total annual cost of $67,203.

The Ionia County Board of Commissioners voted 6-0 at its March 28 meeting to deny a request for a paper ballot hand count in the May 2 election.

The Ionia County Personnel Committee recommended to increase the pay for both the Public Defender and Prosecutor offices to achieve parity.

Ionia County voters will see contested races for Districts One, Three, Four and Five on the county board in November.
