Column: Please leave classics alone

Column: Please leave classics alone Harris Blackwood There were two landmark movies in 1939. One was “Gone With The Wind,” and the other was “The Wizard of Oz.” A few years ago, somebody tried to make a sequel to “Gone with the Wind.” Let me put it this way: Have you seen it on TV lately? I didn’t think so. Now, one of the big movie companies has announced plans for a redo of “The Wizard of Oz.” To use a line from “Gone with the Wind,” “It ain’t fittin’, it just ain’t fittin’.” Sometimes, perfection should be recognized...

Trump's Legacy and the Gullible Old Party

Trump's Legacy and the Gullible Old Party Details GELFAND’S WORLD--Remember when conservative politicians wrapped themselves in the anti-crime image, complaining to the public about how robbers and murderers were getting off on technicalities?  The Jack Webb television shows even made it a joke when Sgt Friday read criminals their rights, as if this were some sort of liberal plot to overthrow the American system of justice. I can’t say I was happy with the report. A decision I had made almost a year earlier had come back to bite me in the ass. Back in the summer of 1992, fresh out of my high school senior year, I had gone with my dad to pay a visit to the navy recruiter in Ventura. A few days after we talked with him, the recruiter drove me the roughly 100 miles down to Bakersfield to the Military Enrollment Processin...

Ballet company seeks people with neurological conditions to star in new films

A national ballet company is calling for people with dementia, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s to submit videos for the chance to feature in new dance productions. Scottish Ballet is asking people worldwide to send a 20-second clip, with the footage to be used in three new dance films as part of the multi-artform project Haud Close. Inspired by the ballet company’s film Haud Close Tae Me, created by filmmaker Eve McConnachie in 2017 and featuring poetry from Scots Makar Jackie Kay, the project will involve working remotely with care home residents and people living with above conditions...
