UCT will resume all academic activities on Monday after the Table Mountain fire that affected large parts of the university's upper campus.
UCT spokesperson Elijah Moholola says most students returned to their residences on Thursday, except for students from Fuller Hall and Smuts Hall, which were badly damaged by the fires.
Around 4,000 students had to evacuate their rooms when the fire spread on Sunday last week. They were provided with temporary accommodation at hotel groups across the city.
Moholola says students have been offered counselling support as they try to adjust to campus life after the devastating fire.

'Born to burn': The alien trees that turned Cape Town fire into a disaster

Cape Town inferno: Maintenance of fire site a centuries-old debate

Firefighters battle the blaze at the HM Pearson, Fuller and Jagger Library buildings at the University of Cape Town's Rondebosch campus on Sunday 18 April.
A study prepared for the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2012 said the forest area of the university had not been proactively managed and recommended urgent intervention not only to protect the environment, but also to reduce risk of a massive flare-up.
The report's relevance is once again being discussed almost a decade later, after a massive mountain fire devoured parts of the mountain on Sunday, leaving six firefighters injured, while at least nine people were treated for smoke inhalation.

Cape Town fires | UCT assessing extent of damage

The 90-year-old Jagger Reading Room was no match for a blaze that broke out on 18 April on Table Mountain. Housing one of the most extensive collections of African Studies materials in the world, the loss of the building is devastating. eNCA's Monique Mortlock has the story. Courtesy #DStv403

University still assessing destruction after devastating fire

University still assessing destruction after devastating fire
Volumes of African literature, including archives of the liberation struggle history and the mid-19th century Cape San people, hosted at the iconic African Studies Library, as well as several historical buildings have been destroyed by raging fires which engulfed the University of Cape Town (UCT) and parts of Table Mountain in the Western Cape province of South Africa.
About 4,000 students were evacuated from residences on 18 April and placed at temporary accommodation sites across the city as the fire, which is believed to have started on the slopes of Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak, spread rapidly to the Rhodes Memorial before reaching UCT’s upper campus in Rondebosch.

Zapiro's 'Fire Damage' Cartoon Is On The Money – 2oceansvibe News | South African and international news

The value of other things is incalculable,
A spokesperson for Old Mutual Insure has estimated that insurance claims from UCT related to the fire could hit the R1 billion mark, whereas Vice-Chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng estimated the damage to be around R500 million.
Neither of those figures can ever replace the historical worth of the diverse historical records, African studies collections, and other materials destroyed in the blaze.
With his pen at the ready, Zapiro has perfectly illustrated this, whilst reminding us that damage to our country continues day in and day out.
Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, in Joburg, was engulfed by flames this past weekend, amidst allegations that the hospital’s fire hydrants were not working.
