Clearing the trails is important to community members whose hopes for a flourishing Moosehead Lake region were crushed late last year.
By Valerie Royzman, Staff Writer The group that maintains Big Moose Mountain in Greenville is clearing four trails that people last skied nearly two decades ago. Friends of the Mountain, a nonprofit, pledged in March to use $200,000 to improve the ski area, including an overhaul of the lift and parking area upgrades, among other projects.
An ambitious project to redevelop a Moosehead Lake region ski resort crumbled because the developer’s financing collapsed, according to the property owner. The development team working to revive a partially defunct ski resort in Piscataquis County told Eastern Maine Development Corp.
The public will have a chance to weigh in on the proposed year-round ski resort in Piscataquis County — potentially influencing the next steps of the project — during a hearing on June 7. The Maine Land Use Planning Commission voted in February to hold a public hearing after two parties, the residents group Moosehead Region Futures Committee and Greenville-area resident Karyn Ellwood, filed requests in January.
