ATHENS - A former University of Georgia professor who confessed to possessing child pornography received a federal prison sentence on Tuesday.
The U.S. Department of Justice said 39-year-old Athens man James Edward Monogan was sentenced to serve 90 months in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release and more than $40,000 in fines.
He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.
Taking Monogan off the streets means that his victims can start to heal, and he can no longer hurt our children or share those dreadful images and details with others, said Special Agent in Charge Katrina W. A former professor in the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs was sentenced Tuesday to seven years and six months in a federal prison for possessing hundreds of images of child porn.
James Edward Monogan III, 39, of Athens pleaded guilty to the child-porn charge last December in U.S District Court in Athens.
Monogan was sentenced by District Court Judge Ashley Royal to the 90 months along with more than $40,000 in fines.
Acting U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary issued a statement saying, “Viewing child pornography is a direct assault against the very children who are being exploited on film. We will prosecute individuals engaging in this deviant criminal behavior.” ....

James Edward Monogan, 39, previously pleaded guilty to having hundreds of images of child pornography.
Monogan has now been sentenced to 90 months in prison, 10 years of supervised release and will have to pay more than $40,000 in fines. He will also have to register as a sex offender.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says a former University of Georgia professor who admitted to authorities that he possessed hundreds of images of child pornography entered a guilty plea in federal court for his crime.
Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia said James Edward Monogan, III, 39, of Athens, pleaded guilty to one count possession of child pornography before U.S. District Judge C. Ashley Royal. Monogan faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison to be followed by a maximum lifetime of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Monogan will also have to register as a sex offender. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled. There is no parole in the federal system. ....
