Humanitarian situation dire in Akoka County after clashes About 1,000 people displaced by last week’s clashes in parts of Akoka County in Upper Nile State are in dire need of humanitarian assistance after their homes and livelihoods were destroyed. At least 11 people were killed, 10 others injured while villages of Pamaikur, Anyangnyang, and Winanei torched following an attack suspected to have been carried out by heavily armed White Army militiamen on Tuesday and Wednesday last week. According to local authorities and the army, the motive behind the attack remains unknown but investigations are ongoing. “Fighting started in the Pananei area. The attackers then went on invading and burning the areas of Moljok, Pamaiker, Wunbic, and Anyangnyang. As we run for our lives, we only carried our children. We left behind food and clothes. Here in Akoka town, as you can see, we are just suffering in the open without food,” Awic Monytong, a displaced resident of Anyangnyang told Radio Tamazuj Monday.

Floods cut off Akoka County, residents lack services Fresh floods have cut off Akoka County from the rest of Upper Nile State, leaving a large number of residents without access to basic services. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Wai Thielbuon Kuek, the acting Akoka County commissioner, said the floods displaced tens of thousands of people from their homes, and rendered the county inaccessible by roads since mid-December. “The floodwaters come from the River Nile and the Sobat River. In the areas of Rom and Biecheng, several homes have been submerged in floods. Close to 16, 000 people have been affected by the floods.”

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj, John Ayual Monynak, the director-general in the state agriculture ministry, said communities in parts of Upper Nile will face hunger in the coming months due to crop failure this year. “Between May and August of 2020, there were droughts. So, no one grew crops. But as it started raining, floods started coming from the River Nile and bushes through Jonglei. From September until now, the floodwaters continue to rise. Areas like Akoka, Baliet, Adong, and Agilaciel expect no harvests due to the floods,” Ayual explained.

In Jonglei, the level of floodwaters continues to rise, forcing tens of thousands out of their homes. “Here the situation becomes worse every day. People are suffering. Over the last few days, more floods hit the area and it affected 1,00 households. Every day people leave the area and go to Malakal,” Muonyngok Abiel Arop, the coordinator for the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Pigi County, Jonglei, told Radio Tamazuj Thursday evening.
