Manatee County Commissioner James Satcher said he submitted a $25 payment Friday to cover the $10 state certification fee he was required to pay during his candidacy and a $15 return fee. Satcher said he was in the process of switching bank accounts when he wrote the original $10 check. By the time the state was ready to process it, his old account had closed, resulting in a bounced payment. Satcher received notification his payment was not accepted in December. But there were questions about whether Trump would be as strong in places such as Sarasota and Manatee counties as he was four years ago after the turmoil of a tumultuous presidency and months of the coronavirus ravaging the state. The election proved that Southwest Florida still is very much Trump country. Trump won Sarasota County by 28,260 votes and Manatee County by 34,821. He carried the two-county region by nearly 5,793 more vo...

Tryon: Plot to oust top Manatee County official was dumb, arrogant

Newly elected local officials tend to overestimate their ability to make big changes in government and underestimate their potential to create a bigger mess. Just look at the three newbies on the Manatee County Commission who, along with an incumbent commissioner, formed a Gang of Four that engaged in a failed effort to abruptly – and without cause – fire the county administrator. The plot was dumb and became dumber as the backstory was revealed. It didn’t achieve its goal and generated chaos. Last month, only days after they were seated on the County Commission, George Kruse, James S...
