Small Screens, Big Scares: 10 More Terrifying TV Movies

Small Screens, Big Scares: 10 More Terrifying TV Movies
Now, Chad Collins compiles another list of terrifying made-for-TV movies! Did your favorite make the list?
By
Chad Collins
In June of last year, I highlighted my
favorite made-for-television horror movies. The response was somewhat divisive, in large part on account of the perceived snubs (sorry,
Salem’s Lot fans). It’s curious, though, because made-for-TV horror movies are, in a sense, a subgenre of their own. Shades of Aaron-Spelling’s heyday, even among those titles he did not produce, permeate almost every entry in the canon of televised scare fests. Despite the diversity– some muted and washed-out, some vibrant and lively, others adapted from seminal pieces of genre fiction– there’s something linking them all together.

70 Years Later: THE CARDINAL by Henry Morton Robinson

Share
by Kevin Di Camillo
In 1950, Henry Morton Robinson, who had up to that point in his life only written a few slim volume of poetry, two politely-ignored novels, and, along with Joseph “The Power of Myth” Campbell,
A Skeleton’s Key To Finnegans Wake, produced what turned out to be a multi-million-copy
New York Times best-selling novel simply entitled
The Cardinal.
Time Magazine praised it as “The year’s most popular book, fiction or non-fiction”, which is surprising because the book is (a) very long (nearly seven hundred pages), and (b) not at all an “easy-read”, filled as it is with ecclesiastical terminology and at times difficult themes of theology.

This year's Golden Globes were unlike any other in its storied history, which began in 1944 when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gathered at the studios of Twentieth Century-Fox to celebrate the filmmaking achievements of 1943. Seventy-plus years later, the Golden Globes Awards show is the first to kick off the awards calendar, and after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 78th Golden Globe Awards aired remotely, with hosts Amy Poehler emceeing from L.A. and Tina Fey from New York City. Winners tuned in from their own homes, some in the traditional ball gowns and tuxes, others in their pajamas.

In Sarasota, progress made on homelessness, but still work to be done

Yet another noteworthy occasion occurred on this date 15 years ago.
On Feb. 14, 2006, New College of Florida hosted a lively public forum. The hot topic: homelessness.
The event responded to the National Coalition for the Homeless’ designation of Sarasota as America’s “meanest city.” Sarasota was tagged after the City Commission passed an ordinance authorizing police to arrest homeless people for camping in outdoor public spaces.
Some proponents of the local law simply wanted to sweep away homeless folks. Others believed the ordinance was the best available tool for getting people off the streets.
The label riled up locals, prompting Jake Hartvigsen, who worked for New College, to call me. He asked how the community might respond to the bad publicity by starting something good. We agreed to jointly sponsor a public forum, which attracted a capacity crowd at Sainer Pavilion.

TRYON: Florida is no longer 'Flori-duh' when it comes to elections

The pejorative phrase described a state that conducted an extraordinarily close 2000
presidential election. In the process Florida placed “hanging chads” in the lexicon, introduced Sarasota’s own Katherine Harris – then the secretary of state – to America and generated controversies settled by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sarasota County attracted more negative attention to the state in 2006. Touch-screen computer problems and “undervote” oddities cast a shadow on Republican Vern Buchanan’s initial general-election win – by only 369 of more than 238,000 votes cast in the congressional district – against Democrat Christine Jennings. Resulting disputes went to lower courts and the U.S. House of Representatives.

Tom Beggs’ holiday tips have run the gamut.
A garbage collector in the King of Prussia area for the last decade, Beggs has received winter gloves, sweatshirts, homemade sweets, and Wawa gift cards.
Tons of Wawa gift cards, he said.
Beggs, 31, of Brookhaven, appreciates any and all tips, he said, and especially loves when customers come out to his big, blue Republic Services trash truck to give the gifts in person. His ideal tip comes in the form of cash, which he then uses to buy Christmas presents for his family and friends.
