A new Antarctic ice sheet modelling study from scientists at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography suggests that meltwater flowing out to sea from beneath Antarctic glaciers is making them lose ice faster.
Researchers have found that subglacial discharge, or meltwater flowing out to sea from beneath Antarctic glaciers, could be causing glaciers to lose ice at a faster rate. This discharge raises the glaciers' contribution to sea-level rise by 15.7% by the year 2300. Current models do not take into account this mechanism, which suggests that current projections underestimate global sea-level rise. The study highlights the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to mitigate the effects of climate change.
