A war over education reform is brewing in Rhode Island, and its outcome could have colossal implications for the state’s politics. Two years after then-Gov. Gina Raimondo announced a sweeping takeover of Providence Public Schools, citing widespread academic failure and frequently unsafe learning conditions, the city’s powerful teachers’ union is demanding a new contract and a return to local control. At the same time, state authorities are deadlocked over whether to hasten or restrict the growth of local charter schools. The multi-pronged conflict has already scrambled traditional partisan allegiances in one of the bluest states in the country. Democrats in the legislature, including members of the leadership, overwhelmingly passed a three-year moratorium on new charter schools out of the state Senate in February. The bill is still being considered in the House, though Gov. Daniel McKee a longtime school choice advocate who ascended from the lieutenant governorship ....
Photo: File Frustrated by a lack of action from the Rhode Island General Assembly on addressing Rhode Island’s broken education system combined with efforts to stop the growth of high-performing charter schools, parents from across the state have come together to form a parent advocacy group – Stop The Wait RI – to ensure their voices are heard at the General Assembly. State Senator Maryellen Goodwin (District 1) has pushed legislation through the Senate the retroactively blocks more than 5,500 new charter school seats intended for primarily poor and urban school children. The legislation is also being strongly supported by State Senators Ryan Pearson, Sandra Cano, and Ana Quezada legislation that will also prohibit any new charters for three years. ....
12/29/2020 COVID-19 impacted everything in Pawtucket in 2020 Nia Dacruz proudly showed off her diploma jacket after officially graduating from Tolman High School in June. She said she was happy to be able to walk across a stage for her graduation. Like at so many other schools, the students at Tolman were deprived of a normal high school graduation ceremony. The school recorded the graduates walking across the stage at McCoy Stadium as well as speeches to compile a full graduation video that aired on Capitol TV.
