Critics say N.S. officials are talking too long to activate provincial alert system

Alert Ready is designed to deliver critical and potentially life-saving alerts through television, radio and cellphones across the country.
But officials in Nova Scotia are once again being criticized for how long it takes the province to activate the emergency alert system.
You can t have bureaucrats, politicians, RCMP haggling over commas and periods and capital letters, just get the alert out, said Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Houston.
Janson Bryan Baker was arrested Wednesday in Amherst, N.S., after a 19-hour manhunt that started in Riverview, N.B.
Baker is accused of shooting a 35-year-old man outside Riverview High School, then fleeing to Nova Scotia. The man, who is a teacher, remains in hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. ....

Support Services Available For Staff And Students At RHS

Riverview High students will be staying home again today, but it will be for a day of at home learning virtually.
Many are still in shock after a shooting on Tuesday left a teacher in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
In a letter to parents and students yesterday, it informed them of the other teachers that came to the aid of their coworker while waiting for emergency services to arrives.
It adds that the injured teacher and his family appreciate the overwhelming support from the community and that he is doing well.
Support services are being offered to students and staff who need it, through in-person and telephone counselling services. ....

HALIFAX The premier of Nova Scotia says the RCMP must change how they alert the public to dangerous incidents following the high-profile arrest of a gunman who remained at large for 19 hours.
Stephen McNeil made the comment Thursday as questions arose about why it took more than three hours on Wednesday for the Mounties to request a provincewide Alert Ready message to warn residents about a manhunt that spanned two provinces. ....

The RCMP has an issue when it comes to whether or not they want to use emergency alerts, the premier said after a cabinet meeting. They need to fix their protocol. ....
