NEW ULM The bands are coming back to New Ulm this year. New Ulm Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Michael Looft told the New Ulm League of Women Voters Tuesday that bands are being booked for 2021 Bavarian Blast and Oktoberfest events. In addition, ticket details and COVID-19 safety plans are being worked out. Bavarian Blast is scheduled for July 15-18. Looft said more information including band confirmation will be released soon. ....
fbusch@nujournal.com NEW ULM On April 27, Brown County commissioners tabled the issue of changing the auditor-treasurer (A-T) position from elected to appointed, but are likely to revisit it soon. The question came to light earlier this year when Brown County Auditor-Treasurer Jean Prochniak, who has 40 years of experience in the A-T office, said she planned to retire June 30, 2021. After 30 minutes of public testimony and discussion, commissioners Scott Windschitl, Tony Berg, and Dean Simonsen said they favored appointing the position. Commissioner Dave Borchert favored continuing to elect the position. Commissioner Jeff Veerkamp said he was undecided but said most people he talked to in western Brown County favor keeping the job an elected position. ....

Commissioners Scott Windschitl, Tony Berg and Dean Simonsen said they favored appointing the position. Commissioner Dave Borchert favored election and Commissioner Jeff Veerkamp said he was undecided, but said most of the people he talked to in western Brown County favor keeping the job an elected position. Commissioners agreed to act on the issue in the near future. Six people gave public testimony and were divided on the subject that came up with the pending retirement of auditor-treasurer Jean Prochniak. ....

NEW ULM With great sadness, the Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) recommended the demolition of George’s Ballroom, Monday. The commission received a report on the need for demolition from several individuals on a committee formed by Brown County to review the issue. Brown County Auditor-Treasurer Jean Prochniak gave an overview of the ballroom’s legal history and status. She said the state historic preservation society recommended bringing the decision to demolish the building before the local preservation committee before bringing it to the state for approval. ....
