SWANTON — When learning about Abenaki culture, Swanton students are always asking for Dick Menard to be their teacher.
“Anytime you can uplift people out of poverty, that is a good thing,” said Don Stevens, chief of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation.
If, after a prescribed amount of time, the community cannot arrive at a just decision about mascots, the state may then — and only then — bring in the so-called experts.
“We do not believe the Thunderbird has any harmful imagery for any student at MVU, including our Abenaki population,” Chief Joanne Crawford, of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi, and Brenda Gagne, president of the school district’s Indian Education Parent Advisory Committee, wrote in a joint statement.
