Under the new law, prisons and jails will not be allowed to hold inmates in solitary confinement for more than 15 consecutive days.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed the HALT bill , limiting the use of solitary confinement to 15 days for those inmates in state prisons and county jails.

The Humane Alternatives to Long-Term Solitary Confinement Act, known as HALT, prevents inmates from being held in solitary confinement for more than 15 consecutive days, or 20 days total in any 60-day period.
