KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 The Court of Appeal today decided that six gibbons seized by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) about two weeks ago should remain under the government department’s care for now, until the Federal Court’s final decision on the fate of the gibbons and the former wildlife ranger who was caring for them. In late December 2020, Perhilitan had reportedly forcibly removed the six gibbons from former ranger Mariani Ramli’s Pahang-based Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GReP) centre, where the gibbons had been undergoing years of uninterrupted rehabilitation for preparation to be released back to the wild. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 31 Stains resembling blood were sighted after the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) captured and removed two gibbons in a second raid today at the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GReP) in Pahang, the Gibbon Conservation Society (GCS) running the rehab centre said. Just two days ago, on December 29, Perhilitan was reported to have forcibly removed four out of six gibbons undergoing rehabilitation at GReP, despite an ongoing and still unsettled court dispute on whether Perhilitan or its former employee Mariani Ramli GReP founder and GCS president should be the ones caring for the six gibbons. ....
PETALING JAYA: The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has removed several gibbons from the premises of a sacked former employee who was conducting a rehabilitation programme for the endangered primates. Mariani Ramli, a former ranger who was dismissed from the department in 2017, had previously been given permission by her employer to rehabilitate six gibbons that would later be released into the wild. Upon her dismissal however, the department withdrew that permission. Mariani had challenged her dismissal and the withdrawal of the permission by filing judicial review proceedings. The High Court had in July 2019 set aside the decision to terminate her employment and also the decision to withdraw the gibbons from her care. ....
