Bam Ramli, 33, founder of the GPSM (Gibbon Protection Society of Malaysia) holds 9 month-old Cinta at an undisclosed location in Pahang, Malaysia. Cinta was rescued from online traders during a sting operation. Bam is currently using her own house for the infants because they need constant care and GPSM doesn’t have the proper facilities yet. She says, “infants need a warm environment at night and need to be given milk every 4 hours.”
Bam is working tirelessly with the government of Malaysia to try to gain permission to build the first ever gibbon rehabilitation center in Malaysia. The GPSM operates off of Bam’s own money and private donations. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 The Court of Appeal today decided that six gibbons seized by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) about two weeks ago should remain under the government department’s care for now, until the Federal Court’s final decision on the fate of the gibbons and the former wildlife ranger who was caring for them.
In late December 2020, Perhilitan had reportedly forcibly removed the six gibbons from former ranger Mariani Ramli’s Pahang-based Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GReP) centre, where the gibbons had been undergoing years of uninterrupted rehabilitation for preparation to be released back to the wild. ....

LETTER | The Gibbon Conservation Society (GCS) would like to respond to the recent statement by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) regarding the events that took place at the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (Grep) site between Dec 29 and 31 last year, especially with regard to the judicial review proceedings suit filed by GCS president Mariani Ramli.

Perhilitan is urging the public not to speculate on the operation,
PUTRAJAYA, Jan 7: The seizure of six gibbons and a Lotong Cengkong (Dusky Leaf Monkey) by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan), from wildlife activist Mariani Ramli, was made following a court order.
Perhilitan Peninsular Malaysia in a statement today said the primates were taken away as the department was acting on a Court of Appeal order, which on Nov 16, 2020 had quashed the decision made by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on July 10, 2019.
It said the Court of Appeal ruled that Mariani did not have the right to keep all the wildlife because she does not own a special permit, in fact her application to set up a conservation and rehabilitation center was not approved because there was no provision under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716). ....
