Sixty years ago this week, southeastern South Dakota was hit with a snowstorm of monster proportions. Beginning on February 16 and lasting through the 18th, the storm dropped a total of 32.2 inches of snow in Sioux Falls, making it the biggest single snow event in Sioux Falls weather history. In addition, the storm accounted for the single highest 24-hour snow total of 26 inches. All told, the month of February 1962 saw over four FEET of snow (48.4 inches) cover the area. ....

Madisonâs city commissioners on Monday heard the first reading of a temporary ordinance dealing with issuing licenses or permits for medical-cannabis enterprises that want to operate within Madisonâs city limits. While the state of South Dakota looks to legalize and regulate the use of marijuana and cannabis products for medical purposes, state law allows cities such as Madison to have cannabis establishments obtain a local license, zoning permit or registration to operate. The municipalities can also charge a reasonable fee for the license, permit or registration. On Monday, members of Madisonâs planning and zoning commission attended the start of the city commission meeting for a joint session of the bodies. The planning commissioners attending were Jim Iverson, Bob Maxwell, Jennifer Wolff, Donna Fawbush, Roger Olson and Michael Johnson. ....
Taps echoed through the rafters at St. Peter on the Prairie and descended into silent remembrance on Sunday afternoon as a small group gathered for a Memorial Remembrance Program. With prayer led by Jim Iverson, retired administrator from Bethel Lutheran Home, and a presentation by Danny Frisby-Griffin, retired U.S. Air Force officer, the program also included a time for sharing memories of the former church and an update on the cemetery. Joel Brick provided special music. Frisby-Griffin began his remarks by speaking of the history of Memorial Day, which has its roots in the years immediately following the Civil War. The head of an organization of Union veterans established a day near the end of May for decorating the graves of the war dead with flowers. ....
