In the best scene in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) asks Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) why Erskine chose him — a skinny, small, sickly kid who desperately wants to serve his country in World War II — to become a super-soldier through Erskine’s serum.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier Just Teased Sam Wilson's Replacement

Today’s fifth and penultimate episode of
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a hugely significant one whichever way you slice it, as it explored weighty, real-world themes, ramped up the plot and featured a surprise cameo from someone who could be a major new player in the MCU. What’s more, it teased Sam Wilson finally embracing his destiny as the next Captain America. And, at the same time, it just established who will take over from him as the new Falcon.
As well as Bucky, Sam’s had another ally backing him up throughout the season so far, Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), a young intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force. You might say the Falcon had taken Torres under his wing, and that literally came true in episode 5. After Sam and Bucky manage to apprehend John Walker, an exhausted Wilson takes his destroyed wings to Torres so he can fix them up. But when Sam leaves with just the shield, Joaquin asks what he wants to do about the wings. “You keep ’em,” Wilson says.

We’re nearing the end of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney+ now, with only a single episode left to go. And this week’s episode gave us a hint that maybe the job of Falcon won’t stay vacant too long now that it looks like Sam Wilson is about to become the new Captain America.
Like The Wanda Maximoff Show, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” is doing its duty to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe by bringing back old bad guys we’d forgotten about and setting up new heroes who will no doubt be important in the future. And just when we thought it might have forgotten about ole Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), they give us a scene this week that indicate his destiny might arrive sooner than we thought.
