For many years, I had an unjustified dislike of short story collections. As an aspiring writer in middle and high school, I was consumed by the notion that a writer must pen novels and only novels. Full-length books were infused with a sense of legitimacy and accomplishment that was then stripped from short fiction.

It’s considered a curiosity in their filmography—a stumble after the remarkable run that began with 'Blood Simple,' a speed bump on the road to 'Fargo.' Thirty years later, it’s time to reconsider.

‘Unanswered Prayers,’ on the death and life of Truman Capote, first appeared in the February 9, 1976, issue of New York Magazine. ‘My life is so strange — it’s not like anybody else’s,’ Capote said.

“I have one student whose mind is filled with strange and unusual thoughts; I advised her to read ‘The Southern Thruway’ three times.”
