In order to not have heat dry out tobacco leaves so they were not rolling around the cigar the air had to be kept very humid in these factories so the windows were nailed shut in summertime so the breeze wouldnt blow the humidity out. Very fine tobacco dust filled the air and filled the lungs of people working in these places. Cigar workers had the second highest rate of tuberculosis of any occupation in the United States.
