Interview: The creative team behind Raya and the Last Dragon

Raya and the Last Dragon is the latest production from the famous Disney Animation studios and the first to be set in South East Asia, even if Kumandra is a fictional representation melding several different cultures. Dan Slevin Zoom’d with
Raya’s two (main) directors, Don Hall (
Big Hero 6) and Carlos López Estrada (
Blindspotting) and co-writer Qui Nguyen (who was also the martial arts consultant for the film). There are two other co-directors (Paul Briggs and John Ripa) making a total of four directors, two screenwriters and a grand total of eight credited “story by” writers.

Raya and the Last Dragon, the titular heroine (played by Kelly Marie Tran) sets out on a mission to find the mythical last dragon and in the process save her world. In the film, Raya is a fierce warrior but as the story unfolds she's much more than that. Saving the world isn't something she can just fight her way through, though. Along the way, Raya has to learn to trust if she has any hope of fixing Kumandra and according to producer Osnat Shurer, it's that vulnerability that ultimately lets her save the day.

TORONTO — When animating Disney’s new film “Raya and the Last Dragon,” Vancouver-raised Benson Shum says he honed in on the subtle details to ensure cultural accuracy.
Available in theatres and on Disney Plus with Premier Access on Friday, the epic adventure follows a Southeast Asian-inspired warrior and her pals as they battle an evil force in the fantasy world of Kumandra.

'Raya and the Last Dragon' Reviews: Critics Generally Positive, Despite A Reliance On Formulas

Disney’s latest feature,
Raya and the Last Dragon, marks the latest entry in the Disney princess lineup. It comes out today in select theaters and on Disney+ via Premier Access, which has an additional cost of $29.99. Subscribers who don’t want to pay the extra cost will have to wait until June 4, when the movie will become available to all subscribers of Disney+ at no charge.

Raya and the Last Dragon takes place in the Southeast Asian-inspired world of Kumandra, where humans and dragons lived together in harmony. The dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity from sinister monsters called Druun.
