While the final result was familiar, this game followed a script we haven’t yet seen in 2021. The A’s fell behind early, spotting Arizona a 5-0 lead by the 2nd inning. But the D’Backs never scored again, and Oakland launched a late comeback against the bullpen that put them over the top plus insurance. The first run seemed harmless enough, as Stephen Piscotty blasted a solo homer in the 4th. They were still down by a lot, but at least they definitely wouldn’t be shut out. Don’t write off Piscotty just yet. Through 32 plate appearances he’s got a 131 wRC+, and Statcast says that’s an understatement of well he’s swung. It turned out to be teenage catcher Tyler Soderstrom, last summer’s 1st-round draft pick. We put him second on our CPL behind lefty pitcher A.J. Puk, while Pipeline swapped the two, with various other mainstream sources landing on each side of that debate Baseball Prospectus and Keith Law chose Puk, while Baseball America went with Soderstrom. ....

The coronavirus pandemic that interrupted and shortened the 2020 season is still ongoing, and perhaps even worsening. The vaccine has begun its rollout, but it will take a long time to get to everyone. Nobody knows precisely what the future holds. For now, spring training is expected to start on time in Arizona and Florida, reports Evan Drellich of The Athletic, with normal report dates in mid-February. The Oakland A’s first Cactus League game is scheduled for Feb. 27, against the Milwaukee Brewers. ....
