HE government says it is consulting with the Joint Operations Command (JOC) to institute jail sentences or more punitive penalties for farmers abusing, misusing or selling inputs accessed via the Command Agriculture or Presidential schemes.
This follows reports that unscrupulous farmers enlisted on the schemes in Binga and Gokwe North were selling fertilisers to middle men, who then resale the inputs in Zambia.
Inputs dealers were reportedly buying cotton bulk blend fertiliser, compound D and top-dressing bags of fertilisers for US$7 and reselling for at least US$20 in Harare or Zambia. ....

Civil Society Groups Opposed To Redwing Surface Mining, Milling

Mutasa South: Civil society groups here have opposed a bid by Redwing Mine to contract Prime Royal Africa (PRA) to set up mining syndicates and exploit shallow open pits (free digging) without undertaking Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
The groups include Centre for Research and Development (CRD) Penhalonga Residents and Ratepayers Association (PRRA), Penhalonga Youths Development Trust (PYDT) and Zivai Community Empowerment Trust (ZCET).
They are up in arms Redwing Mine has a valid Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for underground mining only.
“For the past 10 months, PRA open pits mining activities at Redwing has extensively damaged the environment and increased vulnerability of community to landslides, flooding and hazardous contamination of water among other environmental concerns. ....

Twin suicide blasts ripped through a busy market in Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 32 persons and wounding over 110, officials said.
The rare suicide attack hit the Bab al-Sharqi commercial area in central Baghdad amid heightened political tensions over planned early elections and a severe economic crisis. No one immediately took responsibility for the attack, but Iraqi military officials said it was the work of the Islamic State.
Iraq s Health Minister Hassan Mohammed al-Tamimi said some of the wounded were in a serious condition.
Maj Gen Tahsin al-Khafaji, spokesman for the Joint Operations Command, said, “This is a terrorist act perpetrated by a sleeper cell of the Islamic State. The IS wants to prove its existence after suffering many blows in military operations. The suicide bombings were the first in three years to target Baghdad s bustling commercial area. BAGHDAD Twin suicide bombings ripped through a busy market in the Iraqi capital Thursday, killing at least 32 people and wounding dozens, officials said.
The rare suicide bombing attack hit the Bab al-Sharqi commercial area in central Baghdad amid heightened political tensions over planned early elections and a severe economic crisis.
