A former suburban Catholic school teacher accused of traveling to meet a child has turned himself in, according to police.
JOLIET, Ill. - A former suburban Catholic school teacher accused of traveling to meet a child has turned himself in, according to police.
Jeremy M. Hylka, 44, was arrested by Joliet police on Tuesday at Silver Oaks Hospital in New Lenox, according to Sgt. Dwayne English.

A former Joliet teacher, who was accused of engaging in "inappropriate communication with a minor," has been released on bond following his hospitalization, authorities said.
Jeremy Hylka, 44, was arrested, then released on $10,000 cash bond Tuesday while facing charges of traveling to meet a child and grooming, according to the Joliet Police Department.

JOLIET, IL — Jeremy Hylka, the 44-year-old fired Diocese of Joliet teacher who has been charged with grooming and traveling to meet a child, was booked into the Joliet Police Department's custody around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and released after posting bail.
Hylka brought along enough cash, $10,000, to make sure that he will not have to spend one night in the Will County Jail. His bail was set at $100,000 last month, which means he can go free after posting 10 percent.

JOLIET, IL — The Diocese of Joliet waited until 5:30 p.m. Friday to issue a news release announcing that the person responsible for hiring Jeremy Hylka is now on paid suspension from the St. Joseph Catholic School in Lockport.
"The Diocese of Joliet confirmed today that Jeremy Hylka did not fulfill employment requirements while teaching at St. Joseph Catholic School in Lockport," announced Diocese of Joliet director of communications Mary Massingale.

Joliet Teacher Charged With Traveling to Meet a Child Didn't Fulfill Employment Requirements: Diocese


The principal of St. Joseph Catholic School, Lynne Scheffler, was placed on administrative leave while school and diocesan officials "examine the circumstances regarding Hylka's employment."
According to police, Hylka was arrested after he met up with a man who was posing as a teenage boy for sex. The founder of the online group "Save Our Siblings," said he was the person communicating with Hylka and managed to set up a meeting with the teacher in less than 24 hours.
Hylka taught science and religion at Saint Joseph Catholic School up until April 29 when the diocese fired him upon learning of the charges. Last year, Hylka resigned from a job at Joliet Catholic Academy after the school said it was aware of online allegations against him.

Joliet police have issued an arrest warrant for a former Catholic school teacher accused of inappropriately communicating with a teenage boy.

Jeremy M. Hylka is facing charges of traveling to meet a child and grooming, according to Joliet police.
Police said that Hylka's attorney is promising that Hylka will turn himself in as soon as he released from the hospital. When that will happen is not clear.

The founder of the group "Save Our Siblings," who would only identify himself with his first name, Shane, said he was behind the encounter. He managed to set up a meeting with the teacher in less than 24 hours.
"People say it's stupid, what I’m doing," Shane said. "They think its very dangerous, but no battle has been won from running from gunfire."

JOLIET, IL — At 4 p.m. Saturday, the Joliet Police Department issued a news release announcing that detectives have learned that Jeremy Hylka is currently admitted as a patient in a nearby hospital.
"Detectives have been in communication with Mr. Hylka's attorney who has indicated cooperation for Hylka to turn himself in to Joliet Police Detectives upon his release from the hospital," Joliet Police Department spokesman Dwayne English advised. "As of this writing, the release date/time from the hospital is unknown."

JOLIET, IL — The Diocese of Joliet issued a statement Wednesday afternoon announcing that
Jeremy Hylka will not be returning to his positions at St. Joseph Catholic School in Lockport or St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, both in Joliet.
"The Diocese of Joliet received information from various sources concerning alleged inappropriate communications with a purported minor," director of communications Mary Massingale told Joliet Patch. "Civil authorities have been notified. The diocese, the school and the parishes remain committed to a safe environment for all children under our care."
