Residents in western Alaska are on high alert as the leftovers of Typhoon Merbok are predicted to deliver floods and heavy winds this weekend.

Alaska was battening down for what is slated to be the US state's worst storm in more than a decade, as the remnants of Typhoon Merbok barreled through the Bering Sea, threatening major flooding and hurricane-force winds.

A "bombing out" of the storm is predicted to occur Friday evening, which could trigger coastal flooding on the western parts of Alaska mainland.

Meteorologists project Merbok could surpass the strength of the 2011 Bering Sea Superstorm. The remnants of Typhoon Merbok is being forecasted to be Alaska's strongest storm in over a decade.
