A crowd gathered at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center as Patti Maxine, a Santa Cruz-based musician, strummed her guitar and sang a tribute to Ms. Blue, the blue whale skeleton that has stood guard outside of the Seymour Center since 2000. The whale bones will be lowered to the ground for safe public viewing this month as the metal structures supporting Ms. Blue have deteriorated to an unsafe condition. The Seymour Center welcomed the public to celebrate the whale skeleton Sunday. 

The Seymour Marine Discovery Center announced that the aging metal structures that support the blue whale skeleton on display outside of the center, known as “Ms. Blue,” are unsafe and will be dismantled, and the skeleton lowered to the ground. An event celebrating the history of the skeleton is scheduled early next month.

A couple of weeks ago the Seymour Center posted a video of a staff member taking a sledgehammer to the organization’s front desk.

The Seymour Marine Discovery Center at UC Santa Cruz’s coastal campus is gearing up to revamp its visitor exhibits and experience. New executive director Jonathan Hicken hopes the center will become a hub for local leaders and community members to contribute to climate change resilience.
