Jury finds Tubbs guilty of first-degree murder

5 hrs ago A Pittsburg County jury recommended Jonathan Tubbs to serve life with parole for a first-degree murder charge in connection to February 2020 shooting death of his wife, Catrina Pope.  A Pittsburg County jury took nearly two hours to find a McAlester man guilty on a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of his wife. Jonathan James Tubbs, 40, was charged in February 2020 for first-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, 37-year-old Catrina Pope. The jury recommended Tubbs serve a sentence of life in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections with the possibility of parole. Tubbs’ attorney, Wes Cherry, asked for a pre-sentence investigation as part of the “appellate record” before his client’s June 22 sentencing hearing.

Jonathan James Tubbs, 40, was charged in February 2020 for first-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, 37-year-old Catrina Pope. District 18 First Assistant District Attorney Adam Scharn told the jury during opening statements that the evidence that will be provided over the course of the trial will support a guilty verdict.

The trial against 39-year-old Jonathan James Tubbs was moved to the March jury docket due to “COVID exposure of necessary parties,” according to court documents filed Monday. Tubbs was charged in February 2020 with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 37-year-old Catrina Pope at a residence in McAlester. According to the Pittsburg County Court Clerk’s Office, there are no other trials set for January and residents who received a summons for jury duty will be notified not to report.
