A New Surprise Discovered at Historic Hyde Hall
Hyde Hall, the magnificent mansion at the north end of Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, has a rich and storied past. After many generations of the George Clarke family living there for centuries, the mansion is still giving up some surprises.
In May, collections staff made the unexpected discovery of two Ellen Emmet Rand (1875-1941) sketches tucked in a Clarke family scrapbook in Hyde Hall’s collection.
Larry Smith, Collections Manager, uncovered the images while digitizing the scrapbook that spans roughly from 1880 to 1910. The Clarke family packed the volume with wedding announcements, personal achievements, newspaper clippings, and family photos. While examining the final pages of the scrapbook, Smith found the previously forgotten studies tucked away.
In the first two weeks of the season, guests can view a special flash exhibit where some of Hyde Hall s clothing collections will be making a rare appearance. Among the items that will be on display are an 1830s gown, a butler s outfit, a hunting coat, and a livery uniform.
Tri-County Independent
PIKE COUNTY -Voter turnout was quite low in Pike County on May 18, with mostly municipal elections on the ballot and few of them being contested. Even the four statewide referendums failed to stimulate much interest.
The overall turnout was 18.75%, with 8075 people voting from a total registration of 43,056, according to data released by the Pike County Election Office. Republicans showed the most zeal, with a 22.69% turnout but also with more contested elections than their Democratic brethren who had a 19.97% showing.
Although Primary ballot races are only open to Republican and Democratic voters, anyone registered can vote for the referendum questions. There were 771 non-partisan voters doing so, only 8.40% of the 9,177 registered voters who are neither Democrats nor Republicans.
