Housing and Development Newsletter When I was 9 years old, my family and I went on a multiweek backpacking trip. Along the route, a friend would meet us with a fresh supply of food. Our friend was delayed by one day and my family of four had to survive a day on just a pack of M&Ms and two CLIF Bars. That was the first time I had ever truly experienced hunger. I remember a feeling of helplessness, and being too weak to move — and it was only one day of hunger. Compared to the thousands of families who are food insecure right now, it was nothing.
