ALCOSAN spends more than $1 million to fix sewage leak

The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority hired a contractor last summer to begin more than $9.3 million in repairs. On Thursday, ALCOSAN’s board of directors approved an additional $1 million in repairs after discovering yet another broken pipe this summer, bringing the project’s total cost above $11 million.

INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER PAUL VAN OSDOL HAS THE STORY. PAUL: ALCOSAN IS PLANNING TO DIG A HOLE RIGHT HERE THAT’S 150 FEET DEEP AND THE SIZE OF FOOTBALL FIELD. ALCOSAN SAYS THEY NEED THAT BIG HOLE TO BUILD A TUNNEL FROM HERE IN MCKEES ROCKS TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE OHIO RIVER WHERE THEIR PLANT IS. BUT OFFICIALS HERE IN MCKEES ROCKS SAY THIS PROJECT WILL DESTROY A COMMUNITY THAT ONL REASONS -- RECENTLY BEGAN TO BOUNCE BACK. ALCOSAN BOUGHT THE OLD CRIVELLI CHEVROLET PROPERTY IN MCKEES ROCKS FOR THE TUNNEL PROJECT. BUT MCKEES ROCKS OFFICIALS SAY THEY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THE PROJECT UNTIL THEY SAW SURVEYORS IN THE PARKING LOT. >> WE WERE NEVER TOLD. WE WERE BLINDSIDED BY THE WHOLE PROJECT. >> WE SURE WAS. PAUL: THE LAWSUIT BY MCKEES ROCKS ACCUSES ALCOSAN OF CREATING A PUBLIC NUISANCE AND VIOLATING A FEDERAL CONSENT DECREE BY FAILING TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS. OFFICIALS WORRY THE NOISE AND DUST WILL KEEP RESIDENTS FROM USING THE SHOPPING PLAZA. >> THERE’S GONNA BE A LOT OF TRUCK TRAFFIC HERE. THERE’S GONNA BE A LOT OF NOISE, A LOT OF DUST.
