JOSE “Dodong” Gullas, a champion of Cebuano arts and music, educator and journalist, died in a hospital in Cebu City at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021.
He was 87. His death was first reported by The Freeman on its Facebook page.
In his January 2019 The Freeman column, lawyer Josephus Jimenez paid tribute to Gullas: “Sir Dodong is one very low-key, unassuming leader who talks less and achieves more, who runs UV, leads The Freeman, promotes arts and music, especially Cebuano music, and also remains an unassuming pillar of lay faithful’s support to the Catholic Church.”
Jose Gullas was the chairman of the board of trustees of The Freeman and executive vice president of the University of the Visayas at the time of his death. ....

The above examples of news headlines illustrate the peril of using one and not the other. The first, in Washington Post’s online edition, may be misread by a busy reader with the “dead” describing “mother and son” instead of the verb “shoots.” ....
