Finding an unexpected legal loophole, former president Jacob Zuma on Friday threw another legal dice, asking the Constitutional Court to review its own decision to sentence him to 15 months in prison.
In legal papers filed in court, Zuma cited a range of factors, including that he was sentenced without a trial.
Moreover, he alleged that the court panel that sentenced him included Judge Dhaya Pillay, formally with the Pietermaritzburg High Court, stressing that her presence contaminated the proceedings as Pillay had proven to be his adversary that an officer of the law.

Casac takes JSC to court over 'unconstitutional' ConCourt interviews

JUST IN | Casac takes JSC to court for its 'unconstitutional' interviews of ConCourt justice nominees

The Judicial Service Commission's shortlisting of Constitutional Court justices – during which JSC commissioner, Julius Malema, attacked Judge Dhaya Pillay for her friendship with Pravin Gordhan – is now being challenged in court.
The Council for the Advancement of the SA Constitution (Casac) on Thursday filed papers at the Johannesburg High Court, in which it challenges the constitutionality of those interviews, which saw Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng actively politicising Pillay's interview – after Malema accused her of being an "activist judge", and said she was "unfit for office" because of her friendship with Gordhan.
In the closing moments of Pillay's interview, Mogoeng suddenly remembered that then finance minister Gordhan had, during an unrelated meeting, asked him how she had done in her 2016 interview for a position at the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Casac complained to Parliament's Registrar of Members' Interests about Julius Malema.
The complaint is about Malema's unsubstantiated attacks on the judiciary and his conduct at the JSC.
Casac wants the registrar to recommend Malema is in breach of the ethics code and should be withdrawn as a delegate to the JSC.
The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac) has complained to Parliament's Registrar of Members' Interests over EFF leader Julius Malema's unsubstantiated attacks on the judiciary and his conduct at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Casac's executive secretary, Lawson Naidoo, has asked the registrar to recommend to Parliament's Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests that Malema is in breach of the ethics code and should be withdrawn as the National Assembly's delegate to the JSC.

They are taking place in the context of former minister Sydney Mufamadi’s testimony to the Zondo Commission that during the Zuma era, the State Security Agency set aside millions to buy off judges hearing matters involving former president Jacob Zuma.
And they are taking place in the context of an imbroglio revolving around Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng’s public criticism of South Africa’s relationship with Israel: comments for which he has been ordered to apologise by the Judicial Conduct Committee and thus far refuses to comply.
Little wonder, then, that there appeared to be tension in the air at the interviews to fill two vacancies on the Constitutional Court this week, with questions heavy with subtext.

DURBAN - PUBLIC Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan interfered with the judiciary when he asked Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng how “a friend” of his had performed during an interview for candidates to the judiciary.
This is the view of two independent commentators who hit out at Gordhan as the story surfaced this week during the ongoing interviews for the two vacant posts in the Constitutional Court. Gordhan in a statement yesterday denied that he had tried to influence the appointment of judges.
