Kansas Tennis has two individuals moving on to the semifinals at the ITA Central Regional Championship after senior Malkia Ngounoue and redshirt-freshman Maria Titova won their quarterfinal matchups on Sunday morning.

Additionally, Sonia Smagina landed at No. 81 on the individual rankings while the doubles team of Malkia Ngounoue and Carmen Roxana Manu landed at No. 49 in the preseason rankings.

Kansas notched the first victory of the 2021 season at Tulsa (4-3) back on January 31. The Jayhawks would proceed to mount a win streak that included multiple back-to-back wins, taking 5-of-8 of their matches.
Tulsa (4-3): Kansas took the doubles point behind strong performances from Smagina and Vasiliki Karvouni 6-2 and Julia Deming and Tiffany Lagarde 7-6. In singles play, the Jayhawks tallied victories via Karvouni (6-4, 6-1), Manu (6-4, 7-6 [10-7]) and Ngounoue (6-3, 7-5).

WACO, Texas – The Kansas women’s tennis team secured the No. 9 seed in the Big 12 Tournament and are set to face Kansas State who is the No. 8 seed. These teams will open the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship with first serve at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 22 on the Hurd Grandstand Courts.
The Jayhawks (7-12) and the Wildcats (7-11) battled twice during the regular season, splitting the contests with one victory each.
Back on March 21, Kansas notched a 4-1 win over Kansas State inside the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The Wildcats couldn’t keep up in doubles play as Carmen Manu and Tiffany Lagarde raced out to a 6-1 win, finishing first on the afternoon. Sonia Smagina and Vasiliki Karvouni followed with a dominating 6-1 victory. With a sweep on courts three and one, Kansas took the doubles point. Manu completed her match with sets of 6-4 and 6-0. Karvouni’s match was fundamentally sound, as she routed her competition 6-1 and 6-2. The Jayhawks now held a commanding 3-0 lead over the Wildcats. Maria Linares got Kansas State on the board with her win on court two but Julia Deming put an end to any potential Wildcat momentum. Deming’s court six win wrapped up the match with victories of 6-4 and 6-4.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women’s tennis team will host a two-match weekend at the Jayhawks Tennis Center against Texas and Baylor. First serve versus the No. 2 ranked Longhorns is set for Friday, April 9 at 5 p.m. The No. 49 ranked Jayhawks will commence their match versus the No. 10 ranked Bears on Sunday, April 11 at noon.
Last weekend, Kansas fell in a tightly contested 4-3 match against Kansas State. Doubles play set the tone early on as a prelude to the intense battle ahead. The Wildcats on court three notched the first victory of the day besting Tiffany Lagarde and Carmen Roxana Manu 6-2. However, the Jayhawks rallied back to even the score on court two where Malkia Ngounoue and Julia Deming defeated Kansas State’s duo 6-1. Stuck in a tiebreaker situation, the doubles point rested on the outcome of court one. Sonia Smagina and Vasiliki Karvouni outlasted the Wildcats’ Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares, 7-6 (7-4).

FORT WORTH, Texas – Riding a two-game winning streak into the match, the Kansas women’s tennis team fell, 4-3, to TCU after battling back into contention in singles play on Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Jayhawks fell behind early in doubles, with TCU claiming the point. Sonia Smagina and Vasiliki Karvouni fell to the Horned Frogs on court one after a hard-fought battle, 6-4. Carmen Roxana Manu and Tiffany Lagarde contended on court three for Kansas but were bested 6-3. LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women’s tennis team hits the road for a pair of matches in Texas this weekend, as the Jayhawks take on TCU on Friday, March 12 at 3 p.m., CT, before playing Texas Tech on Sunday, March 14 at 12 p.m., CT.
The pair of matches are Kansas’ first since playing at Oklahoma on February 21, while the Jayhawks stand at 5-3 overall after winning four of their last five matches.
In their last time out, the Jayhawks swept Southeast Missouri State, 7-0 at the Jayhawk Tennis Center on March 6.
Kansas has won each of its last two doubles points against both SEMO and Iowa State, while the Jayhawks are 4-4 in doubles play this season. The duo of Malkia Ngounoue and Julia Deming lead the way in doubles play for KU, standing at 3-1 on the season.
