2021-04-26 06:35:50 GMT2021-04-26 14:35:50(Beijing Time) Xinhua English MALE, April 26 (Xinhua) Maldives ruling party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has won 43 percent of seats in the recently-held local council elections while the largest opposition party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has won 34.9 percent of seats, local media reported Monday. President of Maldives Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef announced over the weekend that 400 out of the MDP s 804 candidates had secured seats while 325 out of the PPM s 646 candidates had done so. According to Shareef, the ruling MDP had won the majority in 71 islands while PPM won the majority in 64 islands. Meanwhile, smaller parties such as the Jumhoori Party won 23 seats, while the Adhaalath party won 11 seats, and the Maldives Development Alliance won 16 seats. The EC said that 173 out of 600 independent candidates also secured seats. ....
