Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh had imposed a ban on construction activity for one week. The decision was taken after the air quality index in several areas crossed the 300 mark during the Diwali period.
Curbs to be enforced from Thursday; currently there are over 1,500 construction sites across the city.
When contacted, Dr Parag Khatavkar, consultant pulmonologist with KEM hospital, said the number of patients with upper respiratory tract infections has spiked. “Also, chronic poor air quality has exacerbated symptoms of patients with chronic respiratory ailments like asthma and COPD,” he added.
