The Hartford City Council on Monday evening approved a resolution recognizing June 19 annually as “Juneteenth Independence Day” and making it a legal holiday.
Juneteenth, holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, observed annually on June 19. It became a federal holiday in 2021. Organizations in a number of other countries also use the day to recognize the end of slavery and to celebrate the culture and achievements of African Americans.
